bom reverse engineering cost: Engineer identifying SMD components on a circuit board under a stereo microscope

How Much Does BOM Reverse Engineering Cost?

BOM reverse engineering cost typically falls between $200 and $5,000 for a single board, with most standard 4–8 layer designs landing in the $400–$1,500 range. The final price depends on total component count, the number of unmarked or custom parts, board layer count, and whether you need sourcing-ready manufacturer part numbers (MPNs) or just package-level identification. Below, we break down exactly what drives that number and how long the work takes.

What Is BOM Reverse Engineering?

BOM reverse engineering is the process of disassembling or inspecting a finished PCB assembly to produce a complete bill of materials—every component, its value, package, reference designator, and ideally a cross-referenced MPN. Our engineers use a combination of visual inspection under stereo microscopes (up to 45×), X-ray imaging for hidden markings, LCR metering for passives, and decap or die analysis when part markings have been sanded or laser-etched off.

The deliverable is typically a structured spreadsheet (Excel or CSV) with columns for RefDes, quantity, description, value/tolerance, package footprint, manufacturer, MPN, and suggested alternates. Some clients also need placement coordinates tied back to Gerber data—this adds scope but makes the BOM directly usable for contract manufacturing.

BOM Reverse Engineering Cost Breakdown by Board Complexity

Board Class Component Count Typical Layers BOM RE Cost Range Lead Time (Working Days)
Simple (sensor module, LED driver) 20–80 1–2 $200–$500 3–5
Standard (motor controller, IoT gateway) 80–300 4–6 $500–$1,500 5–8
Complex (industrial SBC, telecom card) 300–800 6–10 $1,500–$3,000 8–12
High-density (server motherboard, FPGA carrier) 800–2,000+ 10–16+ $3,000–$5,000+ 12–20

These ranges assume one sample board provided. If components are populated on both sides, add roughly 15–25% to account for the additional inspection and potential de-soldering steps. For boards where you also need Gerber file extraction and its associated costs, we often bundle both services at a reduced combined rate.

What Drives BOM Reverse Engineering Cost Up?

Unmarked or Sanded Components

When ICs have their top markings lasered off or chemically removed, identification requires die photography or functional testing. A single unmarked QFP-100 can add $80–$200 in analysis time. Boards with five or more sanded parts can push costs 30–50% above the baseline for that complexity tier.

Passive Component Density

A board with 400 passives in 0201 or 01005 packages takes significantly longer to meter than one with 400 passives in 0603. Our engineers must de-solder, measure, and re-catalog each value. At volumes above 500 unique passive lines, we typically quote by the hour ($65–$95/hr) rather than flat rate.

Custom or Obsolete Parts

Proprietary ASICs, house-marked components, and long-obsolete parts without datasheet availability require extra research. Cross-referencing against distributor databases, die markings, and pin-compatible alternates is labor-intensive. Expect an additional $50–$150 per custom part that requires deep identification.

MPN-Level vs. Generic Identification

Some clients only need “100 nF, 0402, X7R, 16 V” for each capacitor. Others need the exact Murata or Samsung MPN with tolerance grade. MPN-level identification adds 20–40% to the passive portion of the BOM cost because it requires matching physical measurements to vendor parametric tables.

How Lead Time Is Calculated

Lead time starts when we receive the physical sample (or high-resolution photographs for preliminary quoting). The clock runs in working days, excluding shipping transit. Here is how the phases typically break down:

  • Intake & photography (Day 1): High-res top/bottom imaging, component counting, initial complexity assessment.
  • Active component ID (Days 2–5): IC marking lookup, datasheet matching, pin-count verification. This is the fastest phase for well-marked boards.
  • Passive metering (Days 3–8): Runs in parallel with active ID. De-solder, measure, catalog. 0201 and smaller packages slow this phase.
  • Cross-referencing & MPN assignment (Days 5–10): Distributor database matching, alternate sourcing, availability flagging.
  • QC & delivery (Final 1–2 days): Peer review of the BOM spreadsheet, duplicate check, final formatting per client template.

Rush service (48–72 hour turnaround) is available for simple boards under 150 components, at a 40–60% surcharge.

BOM Reverse Engineering vs. Full Board Cloning

BOM extraction is one phase of a larger reverse engineering workflow. Many clients start with BOM RE and then decide whether they need the full package. Here is how the scope compares:

Deliverable What You Get Typical Add-On Cost
BOM only Component list with values, packages, MPNs Base price (see table above)
BOM + Schematic Above + full circuit schematic in PDF/OrCAD/Altium +60–120% of BOM cost
BOM + Gerber Above + fabrication-ready Gerber/ODB++ files +80–150% of BOM cost
Full clone package BOM + Schematic + Gerber + netlist + placement files 2–4× BOM cost

If your end goal is to reproduce the board, bundling from the start is almost always cheaper than ordering BOM extraction alone and adding services later. Our board cloning cost breakdown covers the full-package pricing in detail.

When BOM Reverse Engineering Makes Sense

  • Legacy equipment repair: The original manufacturer is gone, and you need to source replacement components for field units. A motherboard-level reverse engineering project often starts with BOM extraction to assess parts availability before committing to full schematic recovery.
  • Second-source qualification: You have a working product and need to verify or audit the BOM against your approved vendor list.
  • Cost reduction: Identifying expensive or single-source components so your procurement team can find pin-compatible alternates.
  • IP documentation: Recovering lost design files for a product you own but whose original design house no longer exists.

How to Reduce Your BOM Reverse Engineering Cost

Provide Multiple Samples

Having a second board lets our engineers destructively de-solder components without worrying about damaging the only sample. This cuts passive metering time by roughly 20%.

Share Any Existing Documentation

Even a partial schematic, an old BOM with some blanks, or a maintenance manual with a block diagram reduces research hours. Every known MPN is one fewer we need to identify from scratch.

Define Your Required Output Level

If you only need generic values (not MPNs) for passives, say so upfront. This can cut 20–40% from the passive identification phase. Conversely, if you need netlist extraction alongside the BOM, bundling both in the initial quote avoids rework.

Accept Alternates for Obsolete Parts

Tracking down the exact original MPN for a part that went end-of-life in 2009 is expensive. Authorizing our engineers to propose pin-compatible alternates from current production saves research time and often delivers a more useful BOM.

What Our BOM Deliverable Includes

  • Structured Excel/CSV file with RefDes, Qty, Description, Value, Tolerance, Package, Manufacturer, MPN
  • Alternate MPN column with at least one second-source option for every active component
  • Distributor stock-check snapshot (Digi-Key, Mouser, LCSC availability at time of delivery)
  • Flagged items: obsolete parts, long-lead components, and unidentified markings with best-guess notes
  • High-resolution component photographs keyed to RefDes for traceability

How accurate is a reverse-engineered BOM?

For well-marked boards, our engineers achieve 98–99% MPN accuracy on active components and 95%+ on passives (value and package). The remaining uncertainty is typically in tolerance grades for capacitors and resistors where the original part marking doesn’t encode tolerance. We flag every uncertain line item in the deliverable so you can verify during prototype assembly.

Can you reverse engineer a BOM from photographs instead of a physical board?

We can produce a preliminary BOM from high-resolution photographs (≥20 MP, macro lens, both sides) for boards with clearly visible markings. However, passives cannot be metered remotely, and any part with obscured markings will remain unidentified. Photo-based BOM extraction is roughly 60–70% as complete as physical-sample analysis and costs about 40% less.

Do I need to send the assembled board, or can I send a bare PCB?

BOM reverse engineering requires the fully assembled (populated) board. A bare PCB has no components to identify. If you only have a bare board and need fabrication data, that falls under Gerber reverse engineering rather than BOM extraction.

Is there a minimum order or setup fee?

Our minimum project fee for BOM reverse engineering is $200, which covers boards with up to approximately 30 components. There is no separate setup fee—intake photography and complexity assessment are included in the quoted price.

What if some components are damaged or missing from the board?

Missing components are noted in the BOM as “not populated” with the footprint documented. If you have a second sample with those positions populated, we can cross-reference. Damaged ICs with unreadable markings may require X-ray or decap analysis at additional cost, typically $80–$200 per part.
