stm32f030 unlock: STM32F030 microcontroller on a PCB with SWD debug header

STM32F030 Unlock: What You Need to Know Before Submitting a Chip

The STM32F030 can be unlocked when its flash is protected at RDP Level 1, with typical turnaround of 5–10 working days and costs starting around USD 500–800 per unique part number. RDP Level 2 locks the debug interface permanently, making non-destructive firmware recovery infeasible on current silicon revisions. Our engineers evaluate every STM32F030 unlock request against the chip’s actual protection state before quoting, so you know exactly where you stand before committing.

How STM32F030 Read-Out Protection Works

stm32f030 unlock: STM32F030 microcontroller on a PCB with SWD debug header

The STM32F030 series — spanning the STM32F030F4, F030K6, F030C8, F030R8, and CC variants — uses ST’s standard Read-out Protection (RDP) mechanism. It is an ARM Cortex-M0 device with 16 KB to 256 KB of on-chip flash, running up to 48 MHz. Understanding the protection level is the single most important factor in any STM32F030 unlock assessment.

RDP Level 0 — No Protection

Flash memory is fully accessible via SWD/JTAG and the UART bootloader. No unlock service is needed. If your chip is at Level 0, you can read firmware directly with an ST-Link or any SWD-compatible probe.

RDP Level 1 — Read-Out Protection Active

The debug port remains physically connected but flash read access is blocked. Attempts to connect via SWD return bus errors on flash address space. The UART bootloader is restricted — it will not execute the Read Memory command. However, the option bytes are still writable, and the protection can be downgraded to Level 0 (at the cost of a mass erase). This is the level where specialized STM32F030 unlock techniques have the highest success rate. Our lab targets Level 1 using a combination of voltage-glitch-based fault injection and proprietary timing sequences on the SWD interface to extract flash contents before the protection logic completes its block.

RDP Level 2 — Permanent Protection

The debug port is physically disabled at the silicon level. The option-byte write path that would allow downgrading to Level 1 or Level 0 is fused off. There is no documented non-destructive attack on RDP Level 2 for STM32F0 devices. We do not accept orders for Level 2 parts, and we are transparent about this limitation — any vendor claiming guaranteed Level 2 readout on STM32F0 should be treated with skepticism.

Protection Level SWD Access Bootloader Read Unlock Feasibility
RDP Level 0 Full access Allowed No unlock needed
RDP Level 1 Blocked (flash) Restricted High — fault injection viable
RDP Level 2 Permanently disabled Disabled Not feasible (non-destructive)

Who Needs an STM32F030 Unlock — and When It’s Legitimate

We perform STM32F030 firmware recovery exclusively for authorized parties. Typical scenarios include:

  • Lost source code: The original developer left or the repository was corrupted, and you own the product IP.
  • Legacy maintenance: A production board uses STM32F030C8 parts programmed years ago, and you need to replicate firmware for field repairs.
  • Prototype recovery: A one-off prototype was programmed before version control was established.
  • Second-source validation: You designed the firmware and need to verify what was actually flashed onto a contract manufacturer’s boards.

Every engagement requires proof of ownership or written authorization. We operate under NDA and document the chain of custody — details are outlined on our EFM32G unlock feasibility page, which follows the same authorization framework used across all our IC recovery services.

Our STM32F030 Unlock Process — Step by Step

Step 1: Feasibility Assessment (1–2 Days)

Ship us one sample or provide the exact part number (e.g., STM32F030F4P6). We connect via SWD to determine the active RDP level. If the chip returns a Level 2 status in the option bytes, we stop and report — no charge for the assessment beyond shipping.

Step 2: Fault-Injection Preparation

For Level 1 devices, our engineers configure the glitch parameters: supply voltage ramp profile (typically targeting the 2.4 V–3.6 V operating range), pulse width in the 5–50 ns window, and trigger timing relative to the SWD clock edge. The STM32F030’s 48 MHz core clock gives us a well-characterized timing window compared to faster STM32F4 or STM32H7 parts.

Step 3: Flash Extraction

Successful glitching allows our toolchain to read flash page-by-page (1 KB pages on F030 parts with ≤64 KB flash; 2 KB pages on 256 KB variants). We perform a minimum of three full reads and compare checksums to ensure data integrity. If any page shows bit-level inconsistency, we re-extract until we achieve a verified match.

Step 4: Deliverables

You receive a binary (.bin) and Intel HEX (.hex) image of the complete flash contents, plus a dump of the option bytes. If you also need the firmware disassembled into annotated ARM Cortex-M0 assembly, that is available as an add-on service.

Typical Cost and Turnaround for STM32F030 Unlock

Voltage fault injection lab setup used for MCU firmware extraction
Service Tier Scope Estimated Cost (USD) Turnaround
Feasibility check only RDP level identification Free (with order) / $50 standalone 1–2 days
Standard flash extraction .bin + .hex + option bytes $500–$800 5–10 working days
Extraction + disassembly Above + annotated ASM listing $900–$1,400 8–15 working days
Batch (5+ identical parts) Per-unit after first extraction $80–$150 each 1–2 days per unit

Pricing varies with flash size. An STM32F030F4 (16 KB) is at the low end; an STM32F030CC (256 KB) takes longer to extract and verify, pushing cost toward the upper range. We quote exact pricing after the feasibility check confirms the RDP level and flash density.

What Can Go Wrong — Honest Limitations

Fault injection on STM32F030 parts is well-characterized, but it is not risk-free. Here are the failure modes we track:

  • Chip damage during glitching: Aggressive voltage pulses can latch-up the power regulator. We mitigate this with current-limited supplies and real-time monitoring, but roughly 1 in 20 samples may become non-functional. Send a spare if possible.
  • Partial reads: On rare occasions, certain flash pages resist extraction on a specific sample. A second sample usually resolves this.
  • Encrypted application data: The firmware itself may encrypt payloads stored in flash. We extract the raw binary — decrypting application-layer encryption is outside the scope of an unlock service.
  • Counterfeit or remarked parts: We occasionally receive chips marked as STM32F030 that are actually re-labeled STM32F0x1 or clone parts. Die-level inspection adds $100 and 2 days if we suspect a mismatch.

STM32F030 vs. Related Cortex-M0 Unlock Targets

If you work with mixed-vendor BOM designs, you may need unlock services for other Cortex-M0/M0+ parts alongside the STM32F030. Our lab handles several related families:

  • EFM32HG (Silicon Labs Happy Gecko) — uses a different debug lock mechanism but similar glitch-susceptibility profile.
  • Microchip SAMD10 — Cortex-M0+ with a security bit that responds well to voltage fault injection.
  • TI MSP430F2 series — 16-bit rather than ARM, but a common companion chip on legacy boards that also use STM32F030 for newer subsystems.

For serial EEPROM companions on the same board — such as configuration storage in 24C64 I²C EEPROMs or 93C56 Microwire EEPROMs — we can extract those in the same engagement at reduced per-chip cost.

Request a feasibility review
Can the STM32F030 be unlocked if RDP Level 2 is set?

No. RDP Level 2 on STM32F0 devices permanently disables the debug interface at the hardware level and blocks option-byte modification. There is no publicly known non-destructive method to recover flash contents from an STM32F030 at Level 2. We verify the RDP state during our feasibility check and will report honestly if recovery is not possible.

Will the STM32F030 chip survive the unlock process?

In most cases, yes. Approximately 95% of Level 1 samples survive fault-injection extraction fully functional. The primary risk is supply latch-up during voltage glitching. We recommend sending at least one spare sample, especially for production-critical recoveries. If the chip is soldered to a board you cannot sacrifice, discuss this with our engineers before shipping.

What file formats do I receive after STM32F030 flash extraction?

Standard delivery includes a raw binary (.bin) file and an Intel HEX (.hex) file covering the full flash range, plus a separate dump of the option bytes. If you need annotated Cortex-M0 disassembly or a partially reconstructed C project, those are available as add-on services at additional cost and time.

How do I know which RDP level my STM32F030 is set to?

Connect an ST-Link probe and open STM32CubeProgrammer. Navigate to the Option Bytes panel. If the tool can connect but reports “Read Out Protection: Level 1,” the flash is protected but recoverable. If the tool cannot establish an SWD connection at all, the chip is likely at Level 2. We perform this check as part of our standard feasibility assessment if you prefer to ship the chip directly.

Is STM32F030 unlock legal?

Firmware recovery is legal when performed by or for the IP owner — for example, recovering your own lost source code, maintaining legacy equipment you own, or verifying contract-manufactured boards. We require proof of ownership or a written authorization letter before starting work, and all engagements are conducted under NDA. Unauthorized extraction of third-party IP is something we do not offer.
